Ten years ago Oman did not have a single grass cricket pitch. Today, there are two, side by side, in Al Amerat, a short drive from the capital Muscat. These two venues will put Oman on the cricket map when it hosts six matches in the first round of the 2021 T20 World Cup. With the national team looking to participate and enter the Super 12, it is seen as a milestone for cricket in the country, according to Pankaj Khimji, president of Oman Cricket. He will host the World Cup. How often does the United Nations get to host the World Cup? Star Sports [the broadcasters] told me it could be the third biggest sporting event on television, with an audience of 3.5 billion people. Even if Oman gets a billion viewers in the first six matches, and it shows in the Indian subcontinent, it’s huge. It never happened, so we have the moon. We have the full blessing and support of all the authorities in the country, from the executive to the local council, saying let’s put Oman on the map.

Oman Cricket

What is the attitude among cricket teams in Oman regarding team participation? Two things. First, Oman will be seen by a global audience. Few people remember that last week [in India 2016] we made history by beating Ireland in the T20 World Cup. We can now be one of the only Asian Associations to qualify for the second round of the T20 World Cup. They are not mistakes. Secondly, we have defined our goal. Here we are among the top 20 in the world in white-ball cricket. No one can tell us that we went to the World Championship once and disappeared. We hope to enter the Super 12. This is what the team is focused on. If we do that, we will automatically qualify for the T20 World Cup in Australia next year. So the motivation is great. Suddenly a whole new group of people who love soccer are saying we’ve done something amazing by bringing the World Cup to Oman. How did you manage to prepare the team in these times of Covid when there was no playing time? In Oman we are all novice cricketers. We play cricket at the weekend. Our home season consists of weekend tournaments from September to April. All our guys came back from winter five, six weeks ago. During this time, the trainers got them back into shape, which made them lose the pounds they had gained. That’s right, the team is in very good shape. We played a very good T20 series against Mumbai, we beat them 2-1. After the series, at dinner, [Mumbai coach] Amol Muzumdar told me, “You guys managed to ignite a kind of fire [within the Mumbai team] that even I couldn’t.” The T20 series defeat pushed Mumbai to a convincing one-dayer, but we couldn’t have trained better than playing a team of Mumbai’s calibre. When you train against a strong opponent, you learn. Weak opponents help calm you down. Compared to ours, there is a difference between 22-23 years old, the average is 33-34 years old. It was basically like a young team against a veteran team. The preparation has been excellent.

Oman Vs Canada, Group B

Tell us about your director of cricket, Duleep Mendis, and his impact on the team. He has been with us for ten years. I don’t think he thought he would stay that long. At Oman Cricket, we count our blessings to build our team. Since qualifying for the 2016 T20 World Cup, we’ve gone from 40th to around 14th or 15th in white-ball cricket. What more could we ask for? It has been building step by step. The World Cricket League (WCL) is the measure of qualification for the 2023 ODI World Cup, and after three matches, we are at the top of the standings. What I say to my colleagues is, let’s not disturb the cricket, let’s leave that to Duleep. We are just managers. So if you draw a line and let him continue his cricket, it will only get worse. Cricket is not a game of judgment like football where you fire the manager if you lose five times in a row. Losing is a part of progress. Fortunately, we’ve won more than we’ve lost [in the past five years]. Is there a feed-in system for talent? We have a good academy system here, and right now four players have made the national team
