Today 5.30pm • Group North • Vitality Blast • T20 • Leicester Leicestershire Nottinghamshire Match has not yet started Fixtures Table Series

Virat Kohli brought up another double century in Tests, this time at his hometown Feroz Shah Kotla. This is his second double ton in a row, having scored 213 in Nagpur in the previous match. In doing so, he joined an elite club of just six batsmen to achieve the feat in Test history. The only other Indian to have done it is Vinod Kambli, against England and Zimbabwe in 1993. Wally Hammond is the only one to have done it twice.

Kohli set a new record for most double centuries by captains in Tests – six – overtaking Brian Lara, who had five. Considering the period between 1932 and 2015, no Indian captain has hit more than a double century. MAK Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni all hit one each in their time leading the side. Incidentally, since Kohli scored his first double century – 200 against West Indies in Antigua in July 2016 – no other captain has managed even one.

Having not scored a double century in the first five years of his Test career, Kohli has already achieved six such double tons. By 2015, he had 11 hundreds from 72 innings in 41 Tests with a best score of 169. Since then, in 18 months, 33 innings and 22 Tests, he has turned six of his nine centuries into doubles. He joined Virender Sehwag and Tendulkar to score six double hundreds for India. Kohli’s Test Career Period Mat Inns 100s 200s

Kohli emulated Vinoo Mankad to become only the second Indian batsman to hit double hundreds in the same series. Mankad did this in the four-match series against New Zealand in 1955-56. Among captains, Kohli is the fifth to achieve this after Bradman, Graeme Smith, Brendon McCullum and Michael Clarke (twice). He also became the first batsman to score three double centuries in two years each – 2016 and 2017. Kohli’s 243 in Delhi is his career best in Tests, surpassing his 235 against England at the Wankhede in past. This was the 14th time he broke his high score. He started with 4 runs in his debut innings and then improved his scores like this: 15, 27, 30, 52, 63, 75, 116, 119, 141, 169, 200, 211, 235 and 243. Virat Kohli since 2014 continues to disprove the above saying by accumulating runs in all three formats year after year.

In Test Cricket, if you look at what Mohammad Yousuf did in 2006, that is a classic example of how the extended form can bring a big number to his rally.

So does Michael Clarke in 2012. The former Australian captain’s form with the bat was incredible throughout that year. Clarke scored four double centuries in 2012, which is still the record for the most Test double centuries scored by any batsman in a calendar year.

Brendon McCullum scored another 195 in December that year against Sri Lanka, almost matching Michael Clarke’s feat.

Mohammad Yousuf, in 2006, won three times between scores of 190-199, along with his only double century that year. He also had a score of 173 in the nine centuries he scored that year. He could easily have been at this table if he had turned two of his nervous 190s into 200s.

England’s Marcus Trescothick is another player who has come close to this list. Although he did not score any 200+ in 2005, he did score over 4150 in Test cricket that year, including over 2190 and a fine 180 in the Wanderers against South Africa.
