Like their counterparts, the Australian women’s team will enter the competition defending a record that spans the nine World Cups in which the women’s grade has appeared. They will compete in a 12-match doubleheader against New Zealand, South Africa, Singapore, Australia F-22, New Zealand F-22, and South Africa F-22. Although the lack of an England women’s team has affected the grade (the UAE also took part in the last World Cup), it has been boosted by the debut of Singapore internationals, who are competing at world level for the first time.
After round-robin play, grades will be distributed. The top open and under-22 teams will progress directly to the respective finals. The preliminary games will be played between the second and third placed teams to decide the other major contenders.
In a major highlight for the tournament, Cricket Australia announced that local sports streaming provider Kayo Sports will broadcast 43 matches live with commentary throughout the tournament, including all the preliminary rounds and the final. This will provide much needed exposure to the format (known as the fourth format of cricket in Australia). Indoor cricket is a variant of the traditional form of cricket. It is played within the confines of an indoor net court approximately 28m-30m long, 10m-12m wide, and with a ceiling of approximately 4m high, on an indoor sports field. The court is made of artificial turf and the length of the pitch is the same as a standard cricket pitch. A softer cricket ball is used, which means less protective equipment is required.
Each team consists of eight players in a 16 game game. The batting team is divided into four-over partnerships (or pairs) where two players bat together. Most importantly, this means that every player in the batting team has to bat for four matches and every player in the fielding team has to bowl two overs each to complete an innings. For each dismissal during a pair of four matches, five runs are deducted from the team’s total score (unless a player is dismissed as in away cricket).
