England captain Eoin Morgan: “I still can’t believe it, it was an amazing day. Absolutely phenomenal. There was very little between the teams, we were very lucky to get over the line and I’m very lucky to hold this [trophy ] – and extremely proud. It’s been a four-year journey, we’ve developed a lot in those four years, especially in the last two. Sport is sometimes difficult, but to cross the line today means the world to us.”

Sky Sports’ Shane Warne: “I believe England were the best team in this tournament but I think New Zealand were the best team in the final. The important green went to England. They got a score and defended that score to equalize – no penalty Ben Stokes batting for four would have won it. I’m happy for England but they still haven’t really beaten New Zealand. It was a tie in the Super Over.” England are the reigning men’s ODI Cricket World Cup champions, while Australia hold the women’s title.

Organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC), the Cricket World Cup is the premier quadrennial international tournament in One Day International (ODI) cricket.
The inaugural edition of the Cricket World Cup was held in England in June 1975. In fact, the first three editions of the Cricket World Cup were held in England before countries hosted the tournament under an unofficial rotation system since its 1987 edition. As many as 14 ICC members have hosted at least one match of the tournament.
From 1975 to 1983, matches consisted of 60 overs per innings before being reduced to 50 overs per innings in 1987.
Under the current system, a qualifying phase takes place in the three years leading up to the event, which determines which team will qualify for the main tournament.
