Dublin: Cricket Ireland announced on Wednesday that top-order batsman Stephen Doheny and paceman Conor Olphert have received the first call-ups for the two-match T20I series against India.

Both players were recently handed retainer contracts by Cricket Ireland and are now in the 14-man squad to face India on June 26 and 28 in Malahide. There is no place for Indian-origin spin all-rounder Simi Singh, with left-arm batsman Andrew McBrine providing outside off-spin and Gareth Delany as the leg-spinner.

Doheny, 23, plays his club cricket with Merrion and is the current leading run-scorer in the Inter-Provincial T20 Trophy with 158 runs at an average of 52.67, with a top score of 74 not out. He scored valuable runs at the top of the order in the 50-over interprovincial competition, scoring 146 runs at 36.50 with a top score of 97.
Olphert, 25, plays for Bready at club level and while he made his List A debut in 2020, the current season has been more exciting for him. The paceman, known for his pace and bounce, has been picked as a non-bowler in the Ireland men’s tour to the UAE in early 2021. He has so far claimed 6 wickets at 19.17 in the Inter Trophy -Provincial T20 and also took 6 wickets in the 50s competition.
“The T20I squad has a familiar core to the squad, but it is pleasing to see a number of new faces earning their call-ups in Stephen Doheny and Conor Olphert. Both Warriors players have impressed at interprovincial level this season with performances stable, while Doheny also came off a good tour of Namibia with Ireland Wolves.
“Olphert bowled quickly, particularly on good wickets at Comber last month, and his selection provides an opportunity to see him as a tactical option for the rest of the year ahead,” said Andrew White, chairman of the National Men’s. Selectors in a statement.

Ireland begin their busy schedule with a multi-format tour of Bangladesh between March 18 and April 8, which includes three ODIs, three T20Is and a single Test match.

Andrew Balbirnie’s men will next contest a three-match ODI series against Bangladesh in Chelmsford, scheduled between May 9-14. These three ODIs will be part of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League.
Their busy schedule will be further extended if they do not qualify directly for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup through the Super League, as they will then have to compete in the qualifiers to be played in Zimbabwe between June 18 and July 9.
They will also play in the ICC T20 World Cup European Qualifier in Scotland between July 20 and 28.
Ireland will then welcome India for a three-match T20I series to be played in Malahide between August 18-23, before visiting England for a three-match ODI tour from September 20-26.
