Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians and MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings, the two most successful teams in the IPL, are the top two spots•BCCI
IPL 2022 will line up its 10 teams and place them in two ‘virtual’ groups during the league phase of the tournament. The parameters are based on the number of times a team has won the IPL or reached the final. Group A will be led by five-time champions Mumbai Indians, who are the overall leaders, while four-time winners Chennai Super Kings will top Group B with 2. The other teams in Group A, in order, are Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants. Group B features Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans, in that order.
Ipl 2022 To Begin On March 26; 70 Matches Across 4 Venues With Teams Divided In Two Groups
Unveiling the new format on Friday, the IPL said in a release that the 10 teams will play a total of 14 matches – seven home and seven away – during the league phase of a season that now stretches to 70 matches. Ten of the 14 matches will be home and away matches against the other four teams in the group, as well as two matches against the respective group (arranged by seed) from the other group. Mumbai, as an example, will play the other four teams in Group A – Knight Riders, Royals, Capitals and Super Giants – and Super Kings from Group B twice each. They will play the other teams in the other group once each (for a total of 14 games) – these games will be split between home and away. However, the hosting formula will not matter this season as the IPL has decided to limit the league stage to four venues in two cities: Mumbai and Pune. While Mumbai will host the most matches (55), the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium on the outskirts of Pune will host 15 matches during the league phase.
Each team will play four times each at Wankhede Stadium and DY Patil Sports Academy and three times each at Brabourne Stadium and MCA Stadium. Although the IPL will finalize and announce the schedule in early March, it remains to be seen if Mumbai will get matches at their home base at the Wankhede. Changed format for 2011 The format is similar to that used in 2011 when 10 teams were introduced for the first time. The teams were divided into two loose groups with 70 league games and four play-off games, with all teams ranked in the points table. During the league, each team played 14 matches. Each team plays the other four in its group both home and away (eight games), four of the teams in the other group once each (four games, home or away), and the remaining team in the other group twice , at home and abroad. A random draw determines the composition of the groups, as well as who plays whom in the groups once or twice. For 2022, the IPL has confirmed that the tournament will be played between March 26 and May 29. It will begin 10 days after India’s home Test series against Sri Lanka is due to end. This means that the IPL will not follow the recommendation of the RM Lodha Committee, which stated that a two-week break is mandatory between any international series/tournament in which India plays and the IPL.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday announced the group composition and other rules regarding the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, also saying that the lucrative T20 tournament will begin on March 26, with the final scheduled for May 29. As the 15th edition of the IPL will be a 10-team event, a total of 70 league matches will be played in the tournament with all the franchises divided into two groups.

“The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League will be played in a bio-secure environment at a single center to avoid air travel, which is considered a major threat to the spread of the COVID-19 infection, thereby affecting the players and the League/ matches,” BCCI said in a statement.
The league stage of IPL 2022 will be held across four venues in Mumbai and Pune. At the moment, however, the Board has not decided on the location of the playoff games.
Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and DY Patil Stadium will host up to 20 matches each, while Brabourne Stadium (CCI) and MCA International Stadium in Pune have been given 15 matches each.
It should be noted that all the teams will play four matches each at Wankhede Stadium and DY Patil Stadium and three matches each at Brabourne Stadium (CCI) and MCA International Stadium.
How Are The Ipl Matches Scheduled? What Algorithm Is Followed To Schedule The Matches?
Each team will play 14 league matches (seven home and seven away) for a total of 70 league matches in the tournament, followed by four play-off matches.
With the teams divided into two groups, each team will play five teams twice and the remaining four teams only once (two home only and two away only).
Although dividing the teams can prove to be a difficult task, the teams have been divided into two virtual groups based on the number of IPL trophy triumphs followed by the number of finals appearances.
On this basis, Mumbai Indians are grouped along with Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants in Group A. While in Group B, Chennai Super Kings will have SunRisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans.
Ipl 2023 Groups: Ipl 2023 Schedule Released, 10 Teams In 2 Groups
In Group A, MI will play 2 matches each against KKR, RR, DC, LSG. MI will also play 2 matches against CSK and 1 match against other teams in Group B. Similarly in Group B RCB will play 2 matches against CSK, SRH, PBKS and GT. RCB will also play 2 matches against RR and 1 match each against other teams in Group A. IPL 2022 is all set to have a unique format. Unlike the previous 10 seasons, the tournament will not follow a round-robin format where teams play each other twice. Due to the addition of two new franchises, the BCCI had to revert to the 2011 format.
In IPL 2011, the BCCI divided the 10 IPL teams into two groups of five. Teams in the same IPL group played against each other twice during the league stage, while teams from the opposite group battled once.
Also, to ensure that each team plays 14 league matches in the IPL schedule, the BCCI has a mirror opponent rule, meaning that teams in the same group session face each other and the other twice .
This year, BCCI formed the two groups based on championship titles won and final appearances of the 10 teams. Here are the IPL 2022 seeds followed by the IPL groups.

Group A in IPL 2022 consists of the teams Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants. Group B in IPL 2022 consists of Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans.
So, taking a cue from Mumbai Indians, MI will play Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants twice. They will play against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans once.
As CSK and MI are the top ranked teams in their group according to the IPL standings, they will play two matches against each other. Similarly, KKR will face SRH twice, RCB and RR will battle twice, DC vs PBKS will happen twice and new franchises Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans will also go through twice.
Fans should note that although there are 2 groups in the IPL,
