Thanks to Sachin Tendulkar’s 111, India were looking for a huge score on the way. However, Dale Steyn sparked a remarkable collapse with a five to bowl India out for 296.
Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers scored half-centuries to keep South Africa on course, but some late wickets gave India a glimmer of hope.
The tie was reduced to 13 in the final over as Robin Peterson chased down runs against Ashish Nehra with ease. It was the only match that India lost in this World Cup.
After Shikhar Dhawan and Ravindra Jadeja’s quick runs of 114 at the death, India amassed a mammoth total of 331. South Africa lost their match early but kept the chase alive as Peterson and de Villiers scored half-centuries. However, just as they took control of the match, India struck back in the middle of the power play. South Africa were never in control despite Ryan Mclaren’s unbeaten run (61-ball 71) and were bowled out for 305.

India posted a respectable 261 in 50 overs (Shaun Pollock 3-43) thanks to Virender Sehwag’s 59 and Yuvraj Singh’s 62. South Africa started well and reached 192 for 1 thanks to a strong second wicket stand between Herschelle Gibbs and Jacques Kallis (97). But once Gibbs departed injured on 116, Virender Sehwag (3-25) and Harbhajan Singh stamped their authority.
Sourav Ganguly’s unbeaten 141 helped India post a strong total of 295 for 6. The South African innings never got going and he went on to 200, with Zaheer Khan, Anil Kumble and Sachin Tendulkar taking two wickets each.
Against a South African side loaded with fast bowlers, Rohit Sharma will need to be at his best if he is to make an impact in India. He has become a reliable hundreds-scorer in recent years. With his ability to pull the ball, he will threaten to torch any South African short-spacing bowler. If Rohit gets a hundred, more often than not the opposing team is balanced.
India’s batting prowess puts immense pressure on all South African bowlers to perform. But one player who never falters under pressure is Kagiso Rabada. After a wonderful year-and-a-half, Rabada has become almost South Africa’s best player in the first overs. With his ability to swing the ball at pace, he will trouble the Indian batsmen with the new ball and is equally effective at the death.
