Seven can’t begrudge Kohli’s decision to put family first, but the on-air broadcaster is likely to suffer even more from a summer still marred by a fraught contract dispute. India will play 29-day cricket this season, assuming all Tests are played on Thursday. Fox Sports will show all 14 days featuring Kohli, including the series, while Seven will only show one Test featuring the larger-than-life batsman.
Meanwhile, Cricket Australia is hoping stadium crowd restrictions will be eased for the tour of India as Covid-19 restrictions are eased across the country. Australia has seen only single-digit daily new cases for weeks, and an outbreak in Victoria was halted by a four-month quarantine.

India’s players and staff will undergo a 14-day quarantine upon arrival in Australia and will be sealed in a biosecurity bubble during the tour. In a big announcement, BCCI has appointed Rohit Sharma as the new ODI captain of the Indian cricket team. He will succeed his predecessor Virat Kohli to start the three-match series against South Africa in January 2022.
“The Senior All India Selection Committee has also decided to nominate Mr. Rohit Sharma as the future captain of the ODI and T20I teams,” the BCCI tweeted on Thursday.
The announcement comes on a day when the board announced the Indian squad for the three-Test series starting on December 26. Several floating media reports suggested a changing of the guard was imminent before the board decided to end the tension with a tweet. This ended Kohli’s almost five-year captaincy.
Rohit, who took over as India’s T20I captain after the T20 World Cup, led the recently concluded T20I tri-series against New Zealand which the hosts won comfortably 3-0. With Kohli already out as India’s T20I captain, it was only a matter of time before Rohit took over as the captain of the limited-overs side. He was also made India’s vice-captain in Tests, deputizing for Kohli, replacing the informal Ajinkya Rahane.

Rohit has less than a year to prepare for the T20 World Cup in Australia next year, followed by the 50-over World Cup in India in 2023. He has led India in 95 matches – winning 65 and losing 27, and is fourth in the list of most matches as an Indian captain behind Dhoni, Mohammad Azharuddin and Sourav Ganguly.

However, unfortunately, Kohli’s captaincy ends without an ICC trophy, though he is second in the list of most runs scored by a captain in ODIs. With 5449 runs from 95 matches at an impressive average of 72.65, including 21 centuries and 27 fifties, Kohli is just behind the great former Australian captain Ricky Ponting.
