New Delhi, October 3 (Punjabi Times Bureau): The inaugural season of the Global Power Cricket League (GPCL) T20 tournament kicked off at the Yamuna Sports Complex on Sunday and was greeted with a roar of colors and some spectacular cricket action. Top athletes from around the world showcase their talents in a one-of-a-kind competition.

Hosted by India-headquartered Power Sports, the world’s first live digital sports channel, the tournament promises a spectacular T20 tournament with many of the GPCL’s biggest names from the English county circuit, South Africa, Australia and Sri Lanka at home. The final competition will be held on October 9.

During the week-long cricket frenzy, eight teams will battle it out – Indian Sapphires, English Reds, Scottish Mulberries and American Indigos in Pool A and Australian Golds, South African Emeralds, Sri Lankan Violets and Irish Olives in Pool B. Out for that shiny trophy that has been coveted ever since it was brought to the stadium. Eyes are blurry.
The teams, named after the vibrant colors of the rainbow, attended the opening ceremony at the Yamuna Sports Complex, greeted by spectators awestruck by the riot of colors as they entered the stadium.
Sapphires, reds, indigo, emeralds and golds all seemed to merge into one to add color throughout the spectacular performance, making the jersey-clad players look like new-age warriors.
Each team will play three matches in the group stage before the top two teams from each group advance to the semi-finals, where the top team from each group will play the second-placed team from the other group. The winners of the semi-finals will compete in the final on October 9. All matches will be played at Yamuna Sports Complex Cricket Ground.

The group stage matches will end on October 7 and the semi-finals will be played on October 8, with the grand final on October 9. All the days except the final are double headers, the first match starts at 2 pm IST while the second match is an evening-night game.
The tournament will have unprecedented coverage, with Power Sports – the official broadcaster of the GPCL T20 – broadcasting the breath-taking action in 95 territories around the world, with 21 HD cameras capturing the action, showcasing the skills, emotions, celebrations and aesthetic graphics. The league, as part of the NRI Festival, ensures the participation of Indian expatriate youth in every team along with other nationals of that particular country.
The GPCL T20 offers a taste of the World Cup format in which teams from each country compete against each other. A composition of the playing team with a combination of ‘marquee’ players and first-class players and foreign club cricketers has also been considered.
