India’s squad for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games was selected by the All India Women’s Selection Committee on 11 July 2022. This is the first time that women’s cricket will feature in the Commonwealth Games. Cricket has only been played once before in the multi-sport event during the Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games in 1998 when men’s ODI cricket was included. India is one of the five teams to qualify for the 2022 Commonwealth Games due to the ICC Women’s T20I rankings. Harmanpreet Kaur has been named captain and Smriti Mandhana vice-captain of the Indian women’s team that is set to play in the 2022 Commonwealth Games starting on July 29 in Birmingham. Women’s T20 cricket is making its CWG debut this year after a men’s ODI tournament played at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games.

India are in Group A with Australia, Barbados and Pakistan. Sri Lanka, England, New Zealand and South Africa are in Group B. Their campaign begins on July 29 with a match against Australia. The top two teams from their respective groups will advance to the semi-finals.
India recently beat Sri Lanka 2-1 in a pre-tournament series. “We touched all the bases,” coach Ramesh Powar said earlier about India’s preparation for the tournament during the series. “The wickets have been slow, so we didn’t expect too many high-scoring games, but the way Harmanpreet, Shafali (Verma), Jemimah (Rodrigues) and Smriti (Mandhana) have been batting, we are on the right track.”
The Indian women’s cricket team is part of a 215-member squad that the country will send to Birmingham for the Games. IOA deputy president Anil Khanna called it a “gender-neutral section” with 108 men and 107 women in the tour party. The total number of executives is 322, including 72 team officials, 26 additional officials, nine staff, including three general managers.

NEW DELHI, Jun 8 () – India women’s team captain Mithali Raj retired from international cricket on Wednesday after a 23-year career during which she established herself as the country’s best female batsman.
“Like all journeys, this one must come to an end,” the 39-year-old said in a statement on social media.

Raj made her India debut as a 16-year-old in a one-dayer in 1996 against Ireland and scored 68 against South Africa in a Women’s World Cup match in Christchurch in March in what turned out to be her last international outing.
Her tally of 7805 runs, including seven hundreds, from 232 matches makes her the leading run-scorer in women’s ODIs.
She also played 12 Test matches scoring 699 runs, which includes a career best of 214 against England at Taunton in 2002.
“… the last 23 years have been the most fulfilling, challenging and enjoyable years of my life,” said Raj, who led India to the World Cup finals in 2005 and 2017.

Raj was the face of women’s cricket in India and her performance inspired a biopic to be released next month. Harmanpreet Kaur has been named as the new captain of the Indian women’s team after Mithali Raj stepped down. He will lead the squads for India’s white-ball tour of Sri Lanka.
India have named two 15-member squads for the limited overs tour of Sri Lanka. India will play Sri Lanka in three T20Is and as many ODIs, the series starts from June 23.
Earlier today (June 8), Mithali Raj announced her retirement from international cricket, after which Harmanpreet Kaur, India’s T20I captain, took over the reins in ODIs. Smriti Mandhana has been appointed as her deputy.

One big name missing from the list is veteran fast bowler Jhulan Goswami, while Sneh Rana, who featured in this year’s World Cup, is missing from both the squads.
Jemimah Rodrigues returns to India’s T20I squad. This will be her first international since the T20I series against Australia in October 2021. Also returning to the T20I mix is Radha Yadav, who last played in July 2021. 22-year-old Simran Bahadur, who was part of India’s tour in New Zealand ahead of the 2022 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, was added to both teams.
