The Official History Of The ICC Cricket World Cup
England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler got Martin Kaptill out on the last ball of the over as the New Zealand opener raced for a second run that would have secured the Black Caps their first world title.
Both teams scored 241 runs apiece in 50 overs before England scored 14 runs in the final over – including a six off two runs, followed by a fortuitous boundary off the bat of a diving Ben Stokes – to draw New Zealand’s New, 241-8.
This meant that fans watched the first Super Over of the World Cup with their heads wrapped around the explanation of the necessary rules on the big screens inside the home of cricket.
Stokes and Buttler were England’s opening batsmen and scored 15 runs off six balls, including two fours, from Trent Boult.

The New Zealand duo of Jimmy Neesham and Guptill also scored 15 runs off the bowling of Jofra Archer, but England prevailed with a superior boundary figure of 26 for 17 in the regulation and super-over match.
With New Zealand losing twice in the final, the country that invented cricket finally became its own world champion. England had previously lost three finals, including one at Lord’s.
After Buttler collected Jason Roy’s delivery from deep and swept the bail with his left hand, England’s players erupted in celebration – but still waited agonizingly before the TV umpire confirmed the score.
“Out,” read the message on the big screen as Gupta was shown a yard outside the crease.

Butler threw his glove in the air and was quickly mobbed by teammates. Roy was carried on another’s shoulder. Archer ran on his own and skidded across the Lord’s Meadow.

Match draw, super over draw (15 runs for each team)… but the World Cup goes to England for the first time in its 44 year history scoring more boundaries than New Zealand.

The rules introduced for the semi-finals and finals of this World Cup served to separate the finalists through what former New Zealand captain Jeremy Coney called “artificial separation”.
Speaking exclusively, Coney argued: “Why not consider dot balls? Why borders? Of course, New Zealand made mistakes like not bowling slow enough, not cutting enough and bringing on Mitchell Santner too late.
Earlier on Sunday, legend Mike Brearley told this newspaper: “It’s about margins and a bit of luck in the final.”
Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly said, “I have no choice but to say it is unbelievable… Whatever the calculation, talent makes the difference.”

After all, if Jofra Archer had scored one more run in the Super Over, England would have been in misery.
Ben Stokes won the Man of the Match award for his unbeaten 84 after being reprimanded for unacceptable behavior at Bristol in September 2017.
Stokes was born in Christchurch. That’s why Kane Williamson and Co. they will find it so hard to accept a loss.
Williamson was awarded the man of the match award. It may not have been any consolation, but he led admirably and held New Zealand’s batting together.
